LifeQuilt -- The Young Workers
Memorial...
...is a permanent monument honouring the memory of all young workers killed
and injured on the job in Canada. The Work, by Toronto artist
Laurie Swim, measures 9 by
20 feet.
One hundred young Canadians, aged 16-24, who have perished doing a day's work, will be individually represented in commemorative blocks. Combined with the 10x14-inch commemoratives is a Focus Image, a 6'x 9' figure (see
image right) overlaid with the names of young people who have been injured at work.
The artwork will be constructed with the help of the Friends of the LifeQuilt Committee, who
raised
funds and volunteers from across Canada.
Rob Ellis, who lost his 18-year-old son in a workplace accident, is one of a number of parents who are working with Laurie to make her concept a reality. Mr. Ellis sees see the Work as the beginning of a movement to save lives by making workplace safety awareness as normal as seat belt use.
