Ryan Bebeau, 18, Edmonton, Alberta
Ryan decided to work for a year before going to university and got a job at a trailer manufacturing company as a parts driver. On January 10, 1996, he finished his shift, exited the building and stopped for a passing tractor trailer as it pulled out of the shop. The inexperienced, unlicensed driver of the unit took a sharp turn and jack-knifed the trailer, entangling it in a rack of 40 foot pipes. Ryan tried to get the attention of the driver as he watched the pipes flex under the strain of the truck. Without warning, the pipes whiplashed out of the rack, knocking Ryan 20 feet towards the back of the trailer. The truck stopped. Assuming Ryan left the area, as he could no longer see him, the driver proceeded to back up to dislodge the trailer and unknowingly back up over Ryan’s head and chest. Ryan was an honour student and athlete whose passion was drama and acting. He loved and was loved. We dearly miss him.
